Saylorville Lake
Is located on the Des Moines River in central Iowa, just north of the city of Des Moines. For more detailed information on this camping site take a look at the Corp of Engineer's website www.corpslakes.us/saylorville
So far, we have camped here many times. Prairie Flower, Cherry Glen and Acorn Valley campground. The Cherry Glen campground seems to be the most popular in my opinion. It seems that campers stay up later here, and it is more of a party campground compared to Prairie Flower. It is still kid oriented though with a couple of playgrounds and O.K. bathrooms. Sites have electrical hook-ups of course and some have water hookups also. I like the shade provided at this campground, which come with more privacy, but overall it is not quite as nice as Prairie Flower.
Prairie Flower is nice also. The bathrooms and showers here are very clean and the playgrounds are very nice also. We have two small kids, and do like this one better when we are with them. Things quite down a little earlier here also if you have kids to worry about. This one also has nice paved path down to the lake.
Acorn Valley and Bob's Shelter are not quite as big as the other two and don't offer as much privacy. Acorn Valley is alcohol free. It is nice. We stayed there once and had a good time, but the facilities are not quite as nice and not as biker freindly. Bob's Shelter is close to the flood gates and attracts the fisherman.
Overall, I love this place. It has everything a campsite should and huge lake and dam. It has a very nice visitor's center with an Aquarium and miles of bike trails so don't forget the bikes.
